The Whale Earrings were inspired by Humpback Whales, whose annual migratory patterns bring them between Alaska and Hawaii each year.  The backwards hoop design goes in through the back of the ear and secures through the tail in front.  The hammered silver texture on the flukes speaks to the unique markings that scientists have used to identify and track these beautiful mammals.  The hoop design is homage to the way the whales tail is often the last view you see before they dive deep out of sight until they must come up for air again- sometimes 20 minutes or more!
